Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that offers financial support to those in the construction field who are living with life-altering injuries. Once a year the Foundation honors numerous recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil endured a massive stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and it left his left leg majorly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors worried that he would most likely become confined to a wheelchair.

No longer able to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, causing financial pressure on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, an apparatus that uses functional electrical stimulation to help people with Adil’s condition walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they would not be able to afford the device in addition to the intensive rehab that Adil would need so he could learn how to use it.

Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the wonderful grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
